Our beloved Fidos and Fifis give much more than they take. Dogs can increase the quality of our lives and the number of years we live with all the health benefits they provide. Owning a dog can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, boost immunity, dispel loneliness, increase activity level, prevent adult onset allergies and much more.
10. Lower Blood Pressure and Stress
The simple act of petting a dog releases the feel-good chemicals called oxytocin, seratonin and dopamine. When released, these feel-good chemicals help us relax and let go of the stress of the day. Stress is a contributing factor of several health problems, including high blood pressure, so when the body releases pent up stress, arteries naturally dilate and blood pressure is lowered. Also, petting, cuddling and caring for a dog helps us stay focused on the moment instead of worrying about yesterday and tomorrow. Less stress, less worry and anxiety also for natural relaxation and lower blood pressure.
9. Boost Immunity
A social support system (or lack of) has a direct affect on the body’s ability to ward of infections and disease. Developing a close bond with a dog provides a social support system and that strong social support system gives a boost to the body’s natural immune system, enabling it to naturally fend off illness-causing germs and bacteria. No wonder a dog is called ‘Man’s Best Friend’.
