More than 40 million Americans are cigarette smokers, despite the constant reminders of how bad smoking is for your health. The fact is that nearly 70 percent of smokers report that they want to quit, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and as many as 42 percent say they have attempted to quit. Many of these smokers have turned to e-cigarettes in an effort to quit smoking, believing that the electronic versions are safer than regular cigarettes, when actually the electronic versions may be more harmful than you may think. Here are ten reasons why anyone trying to quit smoking should reconsider using e-cigarettes as a method for quitting.
9. Lack of Research
There has been relatively little study done on the vapors emitted from e-cigarettes. The devices are battery-powered cartridges that are filled with nicotine-liquid. When the liquid is heated, it causes an inhalable mist. There are many questions regarding what is released into the body in those vapors, and studies have just begun to determine if the vapors are safe for humans. Doctors continue to warn that more study is needed to determine the potential harmful side-effects of e-cigarettes. In addition, the American Cancer Society has advised against the use of electronic cigarettes until they are scientifically proven to be safe and effective.
